Catch a Dream

I was there on the floor
with my back against the door
searching for the mysterious light
and if I wasn’t back for more
I don’t know what I was there for
a love-hungry saint in the night

and your perfume was there
and my fingers were in my hair
and I felt for you there in the dark
I wondered if I’d dare
and I wondered if I’d even care
bein’ in between ain’t no walk in the park

and you would hold my hand
and I was the king of this here land
but it seemed like a summer’s day dream
I heard music from the band
and all the courage I could command
I was just trying to keep my hands clean

and I was
tryin’ to catch a dream
combin’ my hair in the mirror
tryin’ to look just like James Dean
tryin’ to catch a dream
and I knew it, I could do it
if I could keep my engine clean

in the dark of the movie house
my fingers were quiet as a church mouse
and reality it hit me like lead
behind the softness of your blouse
was a fire no one could douse
I felt desire goin’ ’round in my head

the shivers up the back of my neck
were makin’ me a nervous wreck
when you brought your lips close to my ear
you know that moment you connect
and all your fears just hit the deck
I said to myself that moment is here

and I walked you to your door
my heart was beggin’ you for more
but the night was tellin’ me to go
and the sweat began to pour
as your boots hit the floor
and I just had to tell the night no

and I was
tryin’ to catch a dream
combin’ my hair in the mirror
tryin’ to look just like James Dean
tryin’ to catch a dream
and I knew it, I could do it
if I could keep my engine clean

in the mornin’ when I woke
I thought it must’ve been a joke
but your scent was still hangin’ in the air
and when you turned to me and spoke
I checked to see if my heart was broke
but I found that all the pieces were there

the mornin’ sun was bright
and it bathed us in it’s holy light
as I lay there holdin’ you near
and it all just felt so right
it was warm just like a summer night
and everything all seemed so clear

now I’m stayin’ by your side
and I know it now deep down inside
I found what I needed to be free
I’m just happy that I tried
glad I came along for the mystery ride
I’m just glad that it happened to me

I was just
tryin’ to catch a dream
combin’ my hair in the mirror
tryin’ to look just like James Dean
tryin’ to catch a dream
and I knew it, I could do it
if I could keep my engine clean

(from “Part Five: An Album Full”)

I like how wordy it is. A lot of lines have a couple extra syllables. And I’ve always loved the idea of ‘trying to catch a dream’ as a motif.
